NEV SMASHES THE RECORD BOOKS 08.04.05
Forty seven of the world's top surfers took part in an ‘unofficial’ record-
breaking Guinness Book of Records attempt for the most number of surfers on
a surfboard riding a single wave. The board is 40 feet in length by 10
feet. It took one month and 300 litres of resin, half a tonne of foam and
220 metres of fibreglass to build it at a cost of $50,000. During the
attempt, the larger than life-size FCS H2 model fins were ripped out when
the board ‘dry docked’ on the sand, carrying its record breaking surfers
aboard. “I'm just beside myself," gasped Hyman. "All 47 surfers were in
hysterics as we were getting pushed along. It only lasted a short time but
this has been a mission of mine for a long time – and it's turned out
fantastically." Following this event, the board goes on a global ‘Tsunami
Run’, aiming to raise $200 million for tsunami victims.

BRANDS UNITE FOR ‘CURE FOR KIDS’ FUNDRAISER 08.04.05
The surf community rallied for the Cure for Kids fundraiser, which was held
in Manly on the 19 March. Due to the rough conditions on Sydney’s beaches,
the planned surf school was cancelled and most of the fundraising was
achieved through other means. ‘The Goons of Doom’ donated their time and
sales were generated through barbeque and beer sales. Tim Grainger,
Volcom’s National Sales Manager, whose son was diagnosed recently with
leukaemia, shaved back to a mohawk, as did Team Manager, Joel Spillane.
Manly Surf School operator, Matt Grainger, and Expression Sports Australia
(Nixon, Burton, Gravis) General Manager, Wes Fabb, both got into the action
also ripping off the locks. According to Matt: “Barton Lynch wanted a 4-
comb, but Wes Fabb ripped the comb off and nailed him with a zero.” Volcom
USA tipped in $3,000 taking the tally to $6,500. Donations for the Cure for
Kids fundraiser are still being gratefully accepted, with proceeds going to
the Leukaemia Foundation. For more information contact JC at Volcom on 02
