NEV GOES CYBER 08.04.05
Forget the flying cars and robot maids of the Jetsons, if you wanna see
what the future will look like go no further than Nev’s flagship store on
the Gold Coast. “It’s the next level of surf retail and board
manufacturing,” shaper Nev Hyman proclaimed at the launch of the recently
renovated store in March. Apart from boasting a new minimalist modern feel,
the store also houses a mad contraption called a ‘Design Pod’ – an advanced
computer shaping machine, which will allow the world’s best shapers to
customise boards via email from anywhere in the world and have them made
onsite and ready to ride in two to three days.

TERMINATE THE TERMINAL 08.04.05
The Queensland Government and a consortium of developers have undertaken a
feasibility study to build three cruise liner berths in the Gold Coast’s
Broadwater. Although the results of the study have not been made public,
the Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council (GECKO) says that a
simulation study has been commissioned by the Queensland Government by Star
Cruises of Malaysia to determine whether a 300 metre cruise liner could in
fact navigate the popular Seaway under a variety of weather, wave and tide
conditions.
Surfing Queensland’s Andrew Stark said: “South Straddie and the Spit are
likely to be destroyed as prime surfing locations. Unless the environmental
impact study proves no change or harm to the South Straddie and Spit
surfing locations, we most certainly would be opposed to the plans”. The
‘Terminate the Terminal’ campaign against the development is a combined
effort by Gecko, GCH Environment Council, Nerang Community Association,
Main Beach Progress Association, Surfers Against Ships (SAS) and industry
representatives. For more information check out www.gecko.org.au

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION SLAMS BARWON WATER'S ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD 08.04.05
The Surfrider Foundation has called on Barwon Water to upgrade its Jan Juc
pumping system after a major sewage leak poured into a creek and then onto
Jan Juc (Victoria) beach for at least 12 hours on 2 and 3 February
following heavy rains. Parkland around Hoylake Avenue was littered with
toilet paper after the leak.
Barwon Water has indicated it will increase the capacity of the Jan Juc/
Torquay pipeline to Black Rock. “This does nothing to prevent the Jan Juc
overflow happening again,” said Surfrider President, Iain Lygo. “Increasing
capacity further up the system simply won’t solve this problem. With local
residents claiming overflows are regular events, Barwon Water must protect
the integrity of its system after rain events,” he said.
