TWO STABS’ ARE BETTER THAN ONE 08.04.05

The March–April edition of Stab magazine featured two covers, one of Joel Parkinson, the other of Kelly Slater. Stab’s Derek Rielly explains: “The two covers were in response to changing fortunes in the production of the magazine and not as any cheap gimcrackery. We'd sunk a tonne of cash into shooting Joel (hand-sewn jacket, $400 jeans, we flew Sydney shooter Steve Baccon to the Gold Coast,) and then we get the turn of Slater's life – a faux oop from France. Never been run anywhere. So we threw a little more money at the printers and we had two covers.”

MARK OCCHILUPO INDUCTED INTO AUSTRALIAN SURFING HALL OF FAME. 08.04.05

The legendary surfing career of Mark Occhilupo will enter a new chapter in 2006. ‘Occy’ has announced that the 2005 season will be his last year on the World Championship Tour. The announcement came just weeks before Occy’s induction into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame held prior to the opening event of the year, the Quiksilver Pro. After 22 years, 21 career victories and a coveted 1999 world title, the ‘Raging Bull’ has decided it’s time.

SURFING AUSTRALIA PLEDGES MONEY TOWARDS SURF AID INTERNATIONAL 08.04.05

Surfing Australia showed its support to SurfAid by posting the winning bid of $10,000 for five pairs of framed board shorts signed by World Champions Tom Carroll, Kelly Slater, Mark Occhilupo and Andy Irons, as well as current World number two, Mick Fanning. The auction was part of Australian Surfing Life’s Big Nite, which celebrated 20 years for the surfing magazine.

SURFING NSW BOARD RE-STRUCTURE 08.04.05

The last eight months have seen considerable changes occur in Surfing NSW, most noticeably the induction of new CEO, Mark Windon, and Operations Manager, Michael Talbot. Mark, who has been a prominent member of surfing in the southern suburbs of Sydney, has a strong business background. The Surfing NSW board has been revamped and is stoked to announce the appointment of Channel 9’s David Gyngell onto the board. SURFING AUSTRALIA FORMALLY ADOPTS THE ANTI-DOPING POLICY 08.04.05

The adoption of the policy brings Surfing Australia into line with a majority of national sporting organisations. President of Surfing Australia, “Bushy” Mitchell said “We had been working actively on the policy for some time to make sure that what was adopted by the Surfing Australia board was for the long term benefit of the sport and those competing here in Australia.”
