DESERT2SURF'S ONLINE LAUNCH 02.06.10
Desert2Surf, the brainchild of Melbourne couple Deb Oliver and Robbo Bennetts, is back online with an innovative new website. Launched in 2008, Desert2Surf aims to give indigenous kids aged 12 to 15 from remote communities the opportunity to experience surfing and other outdoor recreations.
Desert2Surf is a not-for-profit, community based organisation which aims to build the capacity of indigenous Australian youth living in remote and disadvantaged communities, guided by a health promotion framework and using a community development approach to improve the health and well-being of the kids involved. Global Surf Industries are among the corporate heavyweights who have signed up as sponsors of the initiative.
The new web presence is an interactive slide show of trip photographs, which underline the simple joy these experiences can bring to kids who might otherwise miss out on such opportunities. There’s also a wealth of information on the website about how to become a Desert2Surf member, sponsorship opportunities and upcoming events.
Desert2Surf's next event, 'PhotoVoice' will feature photos taken by indigenous kids from the N.T.'s Minyerri Community in Alawa country on the Hodgson Downs. The shots are being exhibited at the very groovy Three Bags Full cafe in Abbotsford, Victoria, from June 6 - July 4, and there’s more information about the exhibition on Desert2Surf’s website.
